The Tender Allure
Therefore, behold,I will allure her,and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope. Hosea 2:14
Here is a word we did not expect. God allures. Instead of punishing, He draws with cords of love.
And the place He draws to is the wilderness. The dry place. The stripped land. You did not expect it, yet here you are. Many a believer has walked this path and wondered if the Lord had abandoned them. But the wilderness is where He speaks most clearly.
He speaks comfortably, that is, with a voice that finds the hidden place of the heart. “Thou art still mine.” “I have not forgotten.” “My love has not changed.” Without competing voices these words finally reach what sin’s din had covered.
From that same wilderness He makes vineyards. What was lost returns. Joy rises again. Fruit begins to bud. Because He gives it, the desert becomes the garden of new life.
And the Valley of Achor, that old name for trouble, failure and shame, He turns into a door of hope. Your present sin, the thing you thought had blocked every way back, becomes the door. Through trouble He opens a path. What once spelled your ruined now marks you as reclaimed. Mercy is always one-sided.
There she answers as in the days of her youth. Strength, love, and song come back. New affection stirs. The heart that grew heavy finds lightness again. Like a wife who sees her husband after a long absence.
Dear child of God, are you in such a wilderness? Has the Lord taken you to a barren place? Understand its purpose. This is His tender pursuit. He is removing what can only harm you, so that you might lay hold on Him. He is preparing vineyards you have not yet seen.
Listen for that voice in your sorrow. Be still. Let it reach you where you are and rest. The God who allures is the One who keeps His Word. And see if the wilderness does not become a deeper knowing, a fresher love, a hope that no trouble can shut. He has not left you. He has allured you. And in time, you will sing again.
