Mercy's Measure
"He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth..." Psalm 103:10-12 Lord's Supper Meditation. Table Two.
Here lies a treasure trove of comfort for the sin-weary soul.
"He hath not dealt with us after our sins." Oh, what mercy! Consider for a moment the justice we deserve. If God were to mete out punishment matching our transgressions, who could stand? Yet here, at this very table, we find not the wage of sin, but the gift of grace. The bread you will eat, the wine you will drink - these are not the currency of your merit, but the tokens of His mercy.
"Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities." Meditate on this, dear saint. Your reward, if based on your deeds, would be condemnation. But look! Here on this table lies your true reward - the body and blood of Christ, freely given for you. In partaking, you receive not what you have earned, but what He has purchased.
Now, stand in awe at the measure of this mercy: "For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him." Can you fathom it? Try to touch the rainbow; you cannot. Attempt to reach the stars; they elude you. So it is with God's mercy - it surpasses your grasp, exceeds your comprehension. As you take the elements, remember - you are tasting a mercy as vast as the cosmos, as boundless as space itself.
But there is more, dear one. "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us." Here is liberation beyond measure. East and west never meet; they are eternally separated. So it is with you and your sins at this table. That besetting sin that plagues you? It is removed. That shameful thought that haunts you? It is banished. That guilt that clings so closely? It is cast away.
Oh, troubled heart, as you approach this table, come not in fear of judgment, but in awe of grace. Your sins are not just covered; they are removed. Your transgressions are not only forgiven; they are forgotten. In bread and wine, taste the distance of complete pardon, of mercy beyond measure.
Let every crumb remind you - your sins are farther from you than the east is from the west. Let every drop assure you - God's mercy toward you is higher than the heavens. Here, in these elements, find the immeasurable love of the One who deals with you not according to your sins, but according to His boundless grace.
Rest in His mercy. Rejoice in His pardon. For you are His, and He has removed your sins to the uttermost.
So if the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed John 8:36
