Often what lies in between is of the utmost importance. Today the saying goes, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” meaning that the real joy is in what you experience along the way. Well, for the believer, yes and no. The child of God’s destination far supersedes the journey. (2 Cor. 4:17) Yet the details of the journey, the in-between, can make all the difference in the world. The in-between can make the destination either glorious to see, or dread to fear.
God is a discriminating and dividing God. He always seems to be making distinctions. From the very beginning, He was:
separating light from darkness (Gen. 1:3)
Day from night (Gen. 1:5)
Sky from land (Gen. 1:6)
Land from sea (Gen. 1:8)
Plant from plant (Gen. 1:10)
Sun from moon (Gen. 1:16)
Animal from animal (Gen 1:20-25)
Man from animal (Gen. 1:26)
Male from female (Gen. 2:18)
The clean from the unclean (Lev. 11)
The Jew from the gentile (Gen. 17;1-4)
Hebrew from True Israel (Numb. 2:1,2)
The LORD is always separating, which He carries into the New Testament, where we see Him dividing once more, between:
The sheep and goats (Matt. 25:31)
The wise and foolish (Matt. 7:24)
The clean and unclean (Mrk. 7:1-5)
The faith and sight (Jn. 9:35)
The deaf and hearing (Matt. 11:15)
The darkness and light (Matt. 11:5)
The righteous and condemned. (Matt. 25:41)
Why? Because "your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear." (Isaiah 59:2) That’s why.
God places a great emphasis on the in-between, the things that differ. It’s because He delights to make a difference where there is no difference that He might receive all the glory. But what’s more, so that He can take pleasure in what He has made. (Rev. 4:11)
